Gene Therapy is Helpful or Harmful to Human being?

Imagine the impossibility of gene therapy. More than one gene defect has been associated with cystic fibrosis and retinitis pigmentosa. Would gene therapists propose replacement of all of these genes, at any cost? How would new genes be implanted into a recessed organ like the human eye? Researchers propose using viruses as carriers or vectors for new genes. Yet these viruses are problematic in themselves. The recent death of one patient in a gene therapy experiment, where viruses were used to inject new genes in place of old ones, may cause drug companies to back away from further research.

Do genes control disease?

With a map of every human gene, maybe the course of dreaded diseases could be altered. But there are severe limits as to what gene therapy could ever hope to accomplish. Despite all the hype over biotechnology, gene therapy has cured no human disease to date.
In Britain, geneticists are attempting to create a race of cancer-free babies. Even though defective dominant genes are responsible for only 2 percent of cancer cases, and even the existence of these genes does not assure the baby will develop cancer, the geneticists are analyzing eggs that have been removed from the mother and fertilized by in vitro fertilization. What the reporters don’t say is that the “cure” is to end the life of the embryo, which it is only 6 to 10 cells in size. Thus the cancer is prevented. It’s just another form of abortion!

More can be accomplished with diet and lifestyle modification than with gene therapy. Even though considerable evidence shows that exercise, diet and other lifestyle factors reduce the incidence of adult-onset (Type II) diabetes, scientists continue to search for a genetic link to the disease.

Can genetic disorders be altered, or are they inevitable?

Can genetic disorders be modified by nutritional factors? Yes. Hemophilia is corrected by supplying a missing blood clotting factor. Various congenital malformations of glands can be overcome by supplementing with the hormones produced by these glands.
Misplaced priorities
Mankind is taking what it doesn’t know, and saying it holds great promise, while ignoring what it does know. The fact is, most people in the world don’t die because they have bad genes; they die prematurely because of foul water, poor sanitation, poor quality or quantity of food. Why spend billions of dollars on mapping the human gene pool, the benefits from which have yet to be proven, when the money could be spent on controllable factors in our environment that will readily improve the status of public health?

Co enzyme Q10 Very Essential for Healthy way of Living

Possible Health Benefits of Coenzyme Q10

Ubiquinone, or coenzyme Q (CoQ), was discovered in 1957 by Fred Crane. Its chemical structure was determined a few years later by Karl Folkers, who later won the Priestley medal from the American Chemical Society. CoQ plays an important role in the production of chemical energy in the mitochondria. In its reduced form, ubiquinol, CoQ also serves as an antioxidant. Ubiquinol inhibits lipid peroxidation in biological membranes and in low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and it also protects membrane proteins against oxidative damage. While ubiquinol does not require vitamin E for its antioxidant activity, it can regenerate the vitamin from its oxidized form, the alpha-tocopheroxyl radical, a process that otherwise relies on water-soluble vitamin C. This interaction with vitamin E is thought to be particularly important for the protection of LDL and other lipoproteins from oxidative damage, and we now have evidence that directly supports an antioxidant function of ubiquinol against LDL oxidation in blood vessels. On the other hand, the discovery of the semiquinone form of CoQ in the mitochondria raises the question of a possible role of the ubisemiquinone radical in the generation of superoxide radicals in the course of respiration. However, to date there is no convincing evidence that CoQ acts as a pro-oxidant in vivo.

CoQ is the only lipid-soluble antioxidant that is synthesized in our bodies. In humans ubiquinone-10 (CoQ10, containing 10 isoprenoid units) is the major form, whereas rats and mice predominantly make CoQ9. CoQ is present in all cellular membranes and in lipoproteins. Levels of CoQ10 in plasma are substantially less than those of vitamins E and C and vary greatly in tissues, where the concentrations of CoQ exceed those of vitamin E. Although the relative tissue distribution of CoQ varies by species, the highest concentrations are found in liver, heart, muscle, kidney, and brain. At the sub-cellular level, CoQ is found mainly in Golgi vesicles, which control protein traffic, the inner mitochondrial membrane, and lysosomes, where macromolecules are digested.

CoQ10 is also a micronutrient. However, its bioavailability is limited compared to that of other lipid-soluble antioxidants like vitamin E. We know that uptake of CoQ occurs in blood, blood vessels, liver, and spleen, but generally not in other organs, although some uptake has been reported in mouse kidney and rat brain. Interestingly, in cases of severe CoQ10 deficiency resulting from enzyme defects, muscular and organ functions are drastically improved by dietary CoQ10 supplements, suggestive of an effective uptake. It appears that the extent of uptake correlates with the degree of tissue deficiency. This view is supported by recent observations that oral supplementation of CoQ in rats for 2 months increased muscle and brain levels of CoQ in old but not in young rats. Also, there is evidence that oral supplements increase the concentration of CoQ in the hearts of patients suffering from cardiomyopathies and heart failure. During gastrointestinal uptake, dietary CoQ is efficiently reduced to the antioxidant-active ubiquinol form that enters the circulation within lipoproteins for potential uptake by tissues.

There are a number of conditions in which CoQ tissue concentrations are altered with functional consequences. Oxidative stress generated by, for example, physical exercise increases tissue ubiquinone levels by increasing biosynthesis, as does administration of drugs like clofibrate. In contrast, aging is generally associated with decreases in tissue CoQ levels. For example, levels of CoQ10 in the skin are low in childhood, reach a maximum at around 20-30 years of age, and then decrease steadily with increasing age. Topically applied CoQ10 can penetrate into the living cell layers of the skin and attenuate both the depth of deep wrinkles characteristic of photoaging, as well as the turnover of epithelial cells. CoQ10 is also highly effective in protecting skin cells known as keratinocytes from oxidative DNA damage induced by ultraviolet light. Similar to what is observed in human skin, the concentration of CoQ in various mouse and rat tissues changes with age; the highest level occurs at about the age of 30 days, followed by a subsequent decrease with increasing age. The observed decrease in tissue content of CoQ10 could accentuate the age-related oxidative damage of lipids and proteins, although this question remains to be answered. It is also important to determine whether CoQ10 cellular deficiency is general or affects only certain organelles, such as the mitochondria.

Evidence is accumulating for a role of CoQ10 in the treatment of mitochondrial disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A number of case reports suggest a beneficial effect of supplemental CoQ in patients with known mitochondrial disorders. Perhaps the strongest evidence for a beneficial effect of CoQ supplements comes, however, from animal studies. Oral administration of CoQ10 produces dose-dependent neuroprotective effects against lesions produced by mitochondrial toxins. CoQ10 also protects against 1-methyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) toxicity in mice. Furthermore, CoQ10 supplementation exerts neuroprotective effects in transgenic mouse models of familial ALS and Parkinson's disease. The potential efficacy of CoQ10 in Parkinson's and Huntington's disease is currently being evaluated in human clinical trials.

The first studies indicating a CoQ10 deficiency in myocardial tissue of patients with cardiovascular disease date to the early 1970s—findings that were confirmed in the 1980s. Old rats supplemented with CoQ10 show a significantly higher level of CoQ in their left ventricle, and the hearts of these animals are better protected against functional impairment induced by acute oxidative stress. There is also evidence that CoQ supplements can protect the heart against functional damage induced by ischemia-reperfusion (lack of blood flow followed by resupply), as well as provide tolerance of the aging heart tissue to aerobic stress, although it remains unclear whether this protective effect is the result of an antioxidant and/or bioenergetic activity of CoQ. In human heart tissue, the CoQ10 content in the atrial trabeculae (connective tissue) is decreased in older subjects, and, compared to their younger counterpart, the trabeculae from older individuals have impaired recovery after simulated ischemia. Presently, we don't know to what clinically relevant extent supplemental CoQ10 can increase the heart tissue content of the antioxidant in humans.

Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality in developed countries, and atherosclerosis is the major underlying cause of heart disease. As pointed out in the Spring/Summer 2002 issue of The Linus Pauling Institute Newsletter, prospective trials with antioxidants, principally vitamin E, have not consistently lessened clinical outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease. However, this does not necessarily rule out the possibility that an antioxidant activity of CoQ could ameliorate atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular disease. For example, an overall lack of benefit of supplemental vitamin E could be explained partly on the basis that the concentration of vitamin E does not become limited during disease progression. Also, some studies have found that supplementation with vitamin E alone can increase the oxidizability of LDL, a process commonly thought to contribute to atherogenesis. Ubiquinol effectively prevents this pro-oxidant activity of vitamin E, and enrichment with ubiquinol strongly inhibits LDL oxidation under all conditions tested. Compared to vitamin E, few studies have examined the anti-atherogenic potential of CoQ10, although such an effect of CoQ10 has recently been reported in rabbits. Perhaps more convincingly, supplementation with CoQ10 alone or together with vitamin E has been shown to significantly reduce atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E gene-deficient mice. Whether CoQ10 supplements affect atherosclerosis in humans still remains unknown. The human studies carried out to date are limited to the dysfunction of blood vessel cells, a process that occurs early in atherogenesis and predicts the progression of the disease. The results obtained thus far are inconclusive.

A topical question is whether cholesterol-lowering treatment with 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins) decreases tissue CoQ, and, if so, whether this may attenuate the overall decrease in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease and/or in healthy men at risk for coronary heart disease seen with statins. A potential decrease in CoQ levels could conceivably arise from the inhibition of the synthesis of CoQ by statins. Indeed, there is now evidence that statin therapy lowers plasma concentrations of CoQ, although it remains to be established whether this has clinical consequences.

Over the past few years CoQ10 has gained considerable attention as an agent capable of influencing cellular bioenergetics and counteracting some of the damage caused by free radicals. Animal studies provide increasing support for a beneficial effect of CoQ10 supplements in disease, particularly neurodegenerative diseases and atherosclerosis. These results are encouraging and warrant further investigation, including clinical studies that directly assess a health benefit of CoQ10 supplements in humans.

Vitamin C Essential for all Living creatures

What is  special about Vitamin C

God in His unlimitted wisdom created human being for His Glory but they fall from the Grace of God by disobeying Him.

It is interesting to note that most animals have the ability to produce an enzyme that creates vitamin C from sugar molecules in their own body. For this reason, animals don’t experience heart attacks and can live for many years without the attention of a doctor. It is believed that humans also had the ability to make vitamin C at one time, but eventually lost the capacity to make the essential enzyme. Whether eating of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden had anything to do with this is purely conjecture. But there was obviously some reason why God forbade Adam and Eve from consuming the fruit in the center of the Garden of Eden. Did the fruit biochemically change mankind forever? Vitamin C may not result in immortality, but a constant supply of vitamin C is likely to lengthen the human life span. Americans consume about 100 milligrams of vitamin C daily. One study conducted at UCLA found 300 milligrams of daily vitamin C, three times the amount provided by the average American diet, can lengthen men’s life span by six years. [Epidemiology 3: 194, 1992]

Regardless of biochemistry, man’s rebellion against God’s plan has continued throughout history. The curse of death came upon mankind. The lesson in the Garden of Eden is not about forbidden food, but about defiance and resistance against God.

the true Facts about the Vitamins what we are consuming

An amount of the vitamins which are available in fruits and vegetables are lost between the farm and your plate. If you store the food materials for longtime before you eat them, the more nutrients are lost. Heat, light, and exposure to air all reduce the amount of vitamins, especially Vitamin C, thiamin, and folic acid.

About 25% of US households do not have balanced meals to meet the requirements that the body needs in digesting enough nutrients to sustain the body's health and fuel factors.

In india the percentage is still worse. Even we are not at getting any vitamins from the so called Vitamin tablets.

Thats why Amway having their own farms and labs to preserve the vitality of vitamins and giving their food suppliments thriugh Nutrilite which is no 1  in the world. They are packed with the total vitality under the supervision of well knowledged scientists.

Research has shown that almost all varieties of disease can be produced by the deficiency of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients. Vitamins are vital for your skin. The most important factor of nutritional deficiencies is the intense processing and refining of foods like cereals and sugar.
The human body uses food to manufacture all its building blocks as well as to provide fuel. To do this, it performs several thousand different chemical reactions. Each reaction is controlled by "enzymes" and "coenzymes". Some of the coenzymes contain vitamins which the body cannot make by itself and which must be obtained from outside the body.Among them CoQ10 is very important for Heart patients, people suffering from Parkinson and etc

Why We have to take Vitamins?

Are you going to Doctor and spending lot of money for your health problems instead of finding the real cause for that?

If No, you must understand that you are not having sufficient vitamin intake. So as you know that prevention is better than cure, it's better to intake proper vitamins in right time to check the problem from getting worse.

First of all vitamin is that component of a balanced diet which our body normally cannot produce on its own. So you must take vitamins directly in the form of food or through food supplements as tonic or pills. The whole process of assimilation of vitamins depends on ingestion of food. Once you have it as a part of your meal, say for onion, orange, Apple and other food stuffs, it is more helpful. Moreover you don't feel that you are a patient and need to go to doctorand spend lot of peeny. But if the deficit of a particular vitamin is high, then supplementary dose of vitamins have to be given to the body for a particular period. The body's metabolism is also dependent on vitamins as on carbohydrates, fats, minerals and other basic components of a complete diet. But before adding the vitamin list to our routine diet, let's understand the importance of vitamins in life.

Vitamin A is referred to be a vitamin for growth and body repair. It is very vital in the formation of bone and tissues and also keeps your skin smooth. And if you are night blind, the cure is having more Vitamins A.
Vitamin B1 is an energy building vitamin which helps you to digest carbohydrates. It also keeps your heart and muscles stable.
Vitamin C is a very commonly pronounced vitamin world wide. From kids to veterans, this vitamin is very essential as it protects your bones, teeth and gums. The ultimate medicine for curing scurvy and also resists any infection to grow in your body. Without its support collagen cannot be synthesized in the body.
Vitamin D is very important for children. The common disease seen in kids suffering from malnutrition is Rickets, which is actually caused by the deficit of Vitamin D. Bones cannot grow in a normal way if there is a lack of this vitamin. Direct sunlight is a natural source of vitamins apart from spinach and vegetables. In adults, Osteoporosis is caused due to lack of Vitamin D.
Vitamin E is a wound treating vitamin. It is very mush essential to prevent sterility and to break up blood clots. Damage of cells due to aging can be protected to supplement of this vitamin.
Vitamin B6 is necessary for production of antibodies
Vitamin B12 is required for carbohydrate and fat metabolism. This is a must for children's growth.
Vitamin B2 and Folic Acid help in the formation of red blood cells.

Always remember that vitamins are not food but should be a part of your food.

Danger of Cooking in Microwave Oven

have known for years that the problem with microwaved anything is not the radiation people used to worry about, It's how it corrupts the DNA in the food so the body can not recognize it. So the body wraps it in fat cells to protect itself from the dead food or it eliminates it fast. Think of all the Mothers heating up milk in these "Safe" appliances. What about the nurse in Canada that warmed up blood for a transfusion patient and accidentally killed them when the blood went in dead. But the makers say it's safe. Never mind then, keep using them. Ask your Doctor I am sure they will say it's safe too. Proof is in the pictures of living plants dying. Remember You are also Living. Take Care.

Ten Reasons to Throw out your Microwave Oven

From the conclusions of the Swiss, Russian and German scientific clinical studies, we can no longer ignore the microwave oven sitting in our kitchens. Based on this research, we will conclude this article with the following:

1). Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term - permanent - brain damage by "shorting out" electrical impulses in the brain [de-polarizing or de-magnetizing the brain tissue].
2). The human body cannot metabolize [break down] the unknown by-products created in microwaved food.
3). Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.
4). The effects of microwaved food by-products are residual [long term, permanent] within the human body.
5). Minerals, vitamins, and nutrients of all microwaved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.
6). The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.
7). Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths [tumors]. This may explain the rapidly increased rate of colon cancer in America .
8). The prolonged eating of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.
9). Continual ingestion of microwaved food causes immune system deficiencies through lymph gland and blood serum alterations.
10). Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability, and a decrease of intelligence.
Have you tossed out your microwave oven yet?
After you throw out your microwave you can use a toaster oven as a replacement. It works well for most and is nearly as quick.
The use of artificial microwave transmissions for subliminal psychological control, a.k.a. "brainwashing", has also been proven. We're attempting to obtain copies of the 1970's Russian research documents and results written by Drs. Luria and Perov specifying their clinical experiments in this area.

THE DANGERS OF PORK-EATING

Pork-raising has come to be one of the great industries of this country; and since the supply is wholly regulated by the demand, it may be taken as a proper index of the prodigious quantities of swines flesh which are daily required to satisfy the gustatory demands of the American people. No other kind of animal food is so largely used as pork in its various forms of preparation. The Yankee makes his Sunday breakfast of pork and beans, while the same article is a prominent constituent of at least two meals each day during the remainder of the week. Pork and hominy is almost the sole element of the Texan farmer; while in the Western States pork and potatoes constitute the most substantial portion of the farmers bill of fare. The accompanying dish may be hominy, beans, or potatoes, but the main reliance is pork in each case.
In the case of no other animal is so large a portion of the dead carcass utilized as food. It seems to be considered that pork is such a delicacy that not a particle should be wasted. The fat and lean portions are eaten fresh, or carefully preserved by salting or smoking, or both. The tail is roasted; the snout, ears, and feet are pickled and eaten as souse; the intestine and lungs are eaten as tripe or made into sausages; black pudding is made of the blood; the liver, spleen, and kidneys are also prized; the pancreas and other glands are considered great delicacies; while even the skin is made into jelly. In fact, nothing is left of the beast, not even the bristles, which the shoemaker claims. Surely it must be quite an important matter, and one well deserving attention, if it can be shown that an animal which is thus literally devoured, and that in such immense quantities, is not only unfit for food, but one of the prime causes of many loathsome and painful maladies. Let us examine the hog a little, and see what can be determined respecting his real nature, and his office in the economy of nature, if he has any.

Dangerous Spider Bite

Before you read!!!!!!
See the pictures after brown recluse bite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*A spider bite...please read...........*

And you thought the brown recluse was bad!!!

*Three women in North Florida , turned up at hospitals over a 5-day
period,
all with the same symptoms. Fever, chills, and vomiting, followed by
muscular collapse, paralysis, and finally, death. **

There were no outward signs of trauma.

Autopsy results showed toxicity in the blood. These women did not know
each
other, and seemed to have nothing in common. **I**t was discovered,
however,
that they had all visited the same Restaurant (Olive Garden) within days
of
their deaths. The health department descended on the restaurant,
shutting it
down. The food, water, and air conditioning were all inspected and
tested,
to no avail. **

The big break came when a waitress at the restaurant was rushed to the
hospital with similar symptoms. She told doctors that she had been on
vacation, and had only went to the restaurant to pick up her check. She
did
not eat or drink while she was there, but had used the restroom. That is
when one toxicologist, remembering an article he had read, drove out to
the
restaurant, went into the restroom, and lifted the toilet seat. Under
the
seat, out of normal view, was a small spider.

The spider was captured and brought back to the lab, where it was
determined
to be the Two-Striped Telamonia (Telamonia dimidiata), so named because
of
its reddened flesh color. This spider's venom is extremely toxic, but
can
take several days to take effect. They live in cold, dark, damp
climates,
and toilet rims provide just the right atmosphere.

Several days later a lawyer from Jacksonville showed up at a hospital
emergency room. Before his death, he told the doctor, that he had been
away
on business, had taken a flight from Indonesia , changing planes
inSingapore, before returning home He did not visit (Olive Garden),
while
there. He did, as did all of the other victims, have what was determined
to
be a puncture wound, on his right buttock.

Investigators discovered that the flight he was on had originated in
India .
The Civilian Aeronautics Board (CAB) ordered an immediate inspection of
the
toilets of all flights from India , and discovered the Two-Striped
Telamonia
(Telamonia dimidiata) spider's nests on 4 different planes!

It is now believed that these spiders can be anywhere in the country.

**So please, before you use a public toilet, lift the seat to check for
spiders. It can save your life!** **And please pass this on to everyone
you
care about.*

Lack of sunlight linked to male infertility

By Tamara McLean

AN Australian infertility study has revealed disturbing levels of vitamin D deficiency among men who are unable to impregnate their partners.

The discovery surprised Sydney researchers investigating the incidence of DNA fragmentation of sperm, a significant factor in male infertility.

Sunlight is the major source of vitamin D, which helps regulate levels of calcium and phosphorous to generate healthy bones.

Fertility specialist Dr Anne Clark screened the blood of almost 800 men with fertility problems, finding almost a third had lower than normal levels of vitamin D.

"In a significant number of these men, there were also elevated levels of homocysteine, an amino acid in the blood associated with cell toxicity, and deficiency in folate, which is essential for healthy new cells," said Dr Clark, medical director of the treatment centre Fertility First.

"Men in the study group who agreed to make lifestyle changes and take dietary supplements had surprisingly good fertility outcomes." Dr Clark said the study's results were unexpected.

"Vitamin D and folate deficiency are known to be associated with infertility in women, but the outcomes of the screening among men in our study group came as a complete surprise."

Dr Clark said concerns about skin cancer could be a contributing factor to vitamin D deficiency among men, along with work and lifestyle choices, avoiding too much direct sunlight exposure.

"If that is the case, one wonders if the outcomes in the study group also raise the possibility of significant vitamin D deficiency in the broader public, and its effect on fertility levels," she said.

Of the 794 men tested, 58 per cent were shown to have high levels of DNA fragmentation, according to results to be presented at a national fertility conference in Brisbane tomorrow.

About 100 of the men agreed to quit smoking, minimise or stop their intake of caffeine and alcohol, reduce weight and take a three-month course of vitamins and antioxidants before commencing fertility treatment.

Most significantly improved their sperm quality and 40 per cent went on to achieve a clinical pregnancy, with 11 occurring naturally.

"The results clearly show that lifestyle changes and dietary supplements can be beneficial for the conception of a healthy on-going pregnancy," Dr Clark said.

The role of Iron for our health

Today we are living in the mechanical world. We are least bother about our health. Instead of taking care of our health we are wasting our money by buying medicines after gettting sick. We should know "prevention is better than cure". By spending few pennies we can save lot of pounds.
IRON: Iron makes haemoglobin and haemoglobin carries oxygen to each and every part of our body. Iron fortifies our body to fight infection and helps produce energy. A higher bioavailabity of dietary iron can be achieved by increasing the content of food components which enhance iron absorbtion, specifically ascorbic acid. The keyrole of ascorbic acid for the absorbtion of dietary nonheme iron is on account of (a) prevention of the formation of insolueble and unabsorbable iron compounds and (b) reduction of ferric to ferrus iron, which is a key requirement for the uptake of iron into the mucosal cells.

Role of water in weight management

Nothing quells the appetite like water, lots and lots of water. Start out with two quart bottles in the morning and carry one with you to work or wherever you go. If you like, divvy up the 64 ounces of water into eight (8-ounce) bottles or four pint (16-ounce) bottles to carry around with you all day. Freeze half of them the night before and they will last all day, even in a hot car. Keep some unfrozen so they will be ready to drink immediately.

Yes. You will have to make more frequent bathroom trips, but it is worth it. Drink your 64 ounces of water before dinner, if possible, so you're not up half the night going to the bathroom.

Water not only fills you up and lessens your appetite, it prevents those "hungry horrors" we all encounter when our blood sugar drops and we reach for cookies, candy, ice cream, fries or other high-calorie treats. Water also flushes out the system, rids the body of bloat and toxins and rosies up the complexion. Now, start splashing.

Suggestions for Health living or Long life

1. Dont be stagnated
Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it's a stress buster. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that's great when you're up to it. Meanwhile, move more.
2. Avoid cholestral Food
Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise.
3. Stop Smoking
The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill. Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? It seems the stars in every movie of late smoke cigarettes. Beware. Warn your children of the false romance or 'tough guy' stance of Hollywood smokers.
4. Reduce Stress
Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e.,Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. Thought for the day: When seeing red, think pink clouds….then float on them.
5. Protect Yourself from Pollution If you can't live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It's a good pollution and dirt from the street deterrent
6. Wear Your Seat Belt
Statistics show that seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes. Thought for the day: Buckle down and buckle up.
7. keep fresh Your Teeth
Recent studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it's because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don't?

Disinfection: Old and New Antibiotics

Hyssop (Oil of Oregano)
Though patentable antibiotic drugs, such as penicillin, were only discovered and prescribed by physicians in recent decades, Jewish priests utilized natural antibiotics, which may be as powerful as modern drugs. Here is the Biblical advice for cleansing when handling the dead: “And a clean person shall take hyssop and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it on the tent and on all the furnishings and on the persons who were there.” [Numbers 19:18] The Psalm-ist says: “Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” [Psalms 51:7]
Dr. Cass Igram, in his book The Cure Is In The Cupboard [Knowledge House, Buffalo Grove, Illinois, 1997], notes that hyssop in the Bible is really what we know today as oregano, a commonly used spice. Unfortunately, most of the oregano purchased in food stores today is actually marjoram, which is also known as “sweet oregano.” Only wild oregano (origanum vulgare) contains essential oils that are rich in carvacrol and thymol, types of phenol antiseptics. While many spices, such as basil, mustard, bay leaf and coriander, have ability to kill off germs, it is oregano that exhibits superior anti-fungal activity. [International Journal Food Microbiology, 6: 263, 1988] Oregano was used traditionally by herbalists dating as far back as 3000 B.C. with the Assyrians. Oil of oregano kills off fungi and bacteria and should be included among the list of natural antibiotics. The hyssop (Herbrew: ezob) of the Old Testament (origanum maru var. aegyptiacum) should be distinguished from the hyssop of the New Testament (sorghum vulgare var. durra) which was combined with vinegar on a sponge and offered to Jesus on the Cross. [John 19: 28-29]

Garlic equal, or superior to, penicillin

Garlic is another natural antibiotic mentioned frequently in the Bible and used as an herb by Egyptian and other healers of antiquity. The antibiotic activity of garlic is considered to be “quite remarkable.” As early as 1858, Louis Pasteur tested the antibacterial properties of garlic and onion and found they killed or stopped the bacterial growth in culture dishes in his laboratory. Despite Pasteur’s findings, as antibiotic activity from mold was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1922, and then pharmaceutical companies patented and profited from antibiotic drugs, garlic was disregarded and only considered a folk remedy for infections. History has conveniently been written to attribute the discovery of antibiotics to Fleming rather than Pasteur.
Even strongly diluted garlic preparations can kill many forms of bacteria, as well as fungi and viruses. One scientific report shows that fresh-crushed garlic can kill bacteria at a distance of 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) by its vapor alone. Compared on an equal weight basis, penicillin is 50 times stronger than allicin, the active ingredient in garlic. The antibiotic activity of 1 milligram of allicin equals the antibiotic activity of 15 units of penicillin. [Garlic, The Science and Thera-peutic Application, HP Koch, LD Lawson, 2nd edition, William and Williams, Baltimore, 1996] However, garlic kills a wider variety of bugs, and does not induce the problem of antibiotic resistance. Garlic can also be consumed as a preventive against infection, whereas antibiotic drugs can only be prescribed after an infection is diagnosed. Garlic has advantages over, and is safer than, antibiotic drugs. [Garlic, Nature’s Original Remedy, Fulder S, Blackwood J, Healing Arts Press, Roch-ester, Vermont, 1991]
Some antibiotics work by inhibition of cell-wall degrading enzymes. Garlic was tested against two common antibiotic drugs, tetracycline and streptomycin, and found to be equally effective as drugs at inhibition of growth and enzyme production. [Hindustan Antibiotic Bulletin 37: 44, 1995]
Aloe vera
Aloe vera, often used topically to help heal wounds, bites and burns, is another potent antibiotic in the digestive tract when consumed orally. [Economic Botany 17: 46, 1963; International Journal Dermatology 30: 679, 1991]

What is the God-given food to Human kind

After man sinned, he was driven out of the Garden of Eden, and no longer had access to the wonderful tree of life. Man had to gain his livelihood by tilling the earth, and the "herb of the field" (originally food for the animals) was added to his diet.
GENESIS 1:30 ... "And to every beast of the earth and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepth upon the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for meat; and it was so."
GENESIS 3:17-19 "And unto Adam He said, Because thou hast harkened unto the voice of thy wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it':
Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life.
Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground,...... "
HERBS (vegetables):
Leaf: beet greens, brussels sprouts, cabbage, collard, etc
Flower: globe artichoke, broccoli, cauliflower.
Root: carrots, beets, potatoes, turnips, etc.
Although vegetables (green herb) were not part of the Original Diet given to man, they were added to man's diet after he sinned and are part of his diet today.

THE PRINCIPLE OF LIVING FOODS-ENZYMES

About the ENZYMES
The subject of living foods, in and of it self, could cover a dozen articles. It is one of the most important areas of human nutrition, yet is one of the biggest deficiencies known to date. There is ONE substance that research has proven to be vital to good health, and that substance is ENZYMES. Enzymes are elements in ALL raw and unprocessed foods which support digestive and metabolic processes. Yet one of the most common forms of food preparation destroys these enzymes. Cooking or processing food above 118 degrees (F) destroys these enzymes, thereby placing a huge demand on the body to supply what should normally be supplied in the food itself.
The body can't possibly keep up with the demand for large amounts of enzymes, usually three times a day. Yes, our body has the ability to produce enzymes, or else we would all be dead. However, the amounts needed by the body to handle enzyme deficient foods is far more than the body was designed for, or normally produces routinely throughout any given day. This process, if continued month after month, year after year, produces an enzyme deficiency within the body. This forcing of our body to produce enzymes eventually wears out our enzyme-producing capability.
The enzymes normally present in the tissues and organs of the body are responsible for EVERY process known in the body. There isn't one single process known that doesn't need enzymes to occur. Imagine what happens to the body when the enzymes levels gradually decrease. As enzymes decrease, degenerative changes, aging, etc., increase. Enzymes minimize these degenerative changes. They promote regeneration, healing, defense and detoxification.

Over time, the lacks of enzymes promote a cascade of events within the body involving multiple systems of the body. Much of what we call "aging" is nothing more than the premature degenerative changes brought on by our unhealthy lifestyle. Enzymes, as God created them in living foods, are vital for proper health and metabolic processes. It is a major player in preventive health care. We need them in our foods or we need to add them TO our foods that don't have them.

Enf of this post you may ask me what to do? Is there any way to get some good food materials? Ya there is one way to get good food supliments that is AMWAY

THE PRINCIPLE OF THE NATURAL SYSTEM

There has been a great deal of frustration for many people regarding health over the years. When you have, on the one hand, professionals stating "this," and other professionals who counter "this" with "that." If the professionals can't agree, how in the world can most of the rest of us know what is true or not true, and what to do? The single biggest key to good health is this.

God is the designer of all we know and see. He did so with US in mind. He designed it to all work together, even if there are many things occurring now in the natural world that will be changed when Christ returns.

The simplest way to know what to do when you have a question about health is to ask yourself this. "Is this food, vitamin, whatever, a direct reflection of the created natural order? Is it in the same state that nature provides it, or as close as possible to this state? How far has it been removed from this normal, natural state, and altered to be something else? Satan masquerades as an angel of light.

Is it surprising that He pawns off something that appears to be genuine and good, but in fact is slowly destroying health? That is his goal, and we have bought into it wholesale. We supply the body with building blocks through our diet. Do you think it is possible to build good health with processed foods, chemicals, artificial preservatives and additives? In other words, FAKE foods. Deceptive foods. Lying foods. Foods that support taste and looks, and we've been conditioned to act on those two criteria.

One point to make clear here is this. Human physiology is "generally" identical, since it all functions within the natural laws God set up. However, within this general physiology, there are, oftentimes, differences in how someone might respond to certain helps. Diet and nutrition is the most basic.

Health "helps," such as herbs, homeopathic substances, Reflexology, Chiropractic, massage, etc., even though all within the natural system, won't necessarily work the same for everyone. There is a lot of duplication within the natural system, and various herbs, for instance, do similar things. The point is because one thing helps YOU, doesn't necessarily mean it is THE "magic bullet" for everyone else. "Magic Bullet?" You know, that single magic substance that we have all looked for to take care of our health problem. We read about a substance in a health magazine, or hear about it on the TV or radio, and we get excited because all the symptoms they describe as being caused by a "deficiency" of this element, WE have. So we go out and buy this one "miracle" substance in the hope that "IT" is the answer we have been looking for.

We WANT easy answers. We WANT an easy way to be healthy. We have been conditioned to believe that a pill is what we need to be healthy. Next month, there is another "miracle" substance that is promoted, and millions go out for THAT. On and on it goes till we have spent a fortune on useless concoctions that make many companies money, but don't do a thing for health. Fads are big business and anyone can develop and promote something, playing on the magic bullet belief system so many of us have. Yes, there are SOME good health products out there, but even in the natural arena, Satan still rules, and we need to exercise wisdom and caution. God is the creator. Remember that and you'll know what is real and what isn't.

The Holy Bible & the Diet

What The Holy Bible says about our Diet?
In the beginning before man sinned:
GENESIS 1:29 "Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."
The following explanation of Genesis 1:29 is given according to foods as we know them today:
EVERY HERB BEARING SEED... (a seed plant which does not develop woody persistent tissue)
GRAINS - wheat, corn, rye, barley, rice, oats, millet, etc.
SEEDS - sunflower, sesame, flax, pumpkin seeds, etc.
LEGUMES - soybeans, lentils, peas, peanuts, other beans, etc.
SUCCULENT FOODS CONTAINING SEED - eggplant, okra, bell peppers, squash, green beans, pumpkins, cucumbers, tomatoes, melons, etc.
... and EVERY TREE, in the which is THE FRUIT OF A TREE YIELDING SEED ..... (a woody perennial plant, shrub, or bush).
FRUITS - citrus fruits, sweet fruits, palm fruits, etc.
NUTS - almonds, pecans, cashews, brazil, walnuts, etc.
After man sinned, he was driven out of the Garden of Eden, and no longer had access to the wonderful tree of life. Man had to gain his livelihood by tilling the earth, and the "herb of the field" (originally food for the animals) was added to his diet.

Choosing a safe and successful Weight-Loss programs-Positrim

Almost any of the commercial weight-loss programs can work, but only if they motivate you sufficiently to decrease the amount of calories you eat or increase the amount of calories you burn each day (or both). What elements of a weight-loss program should a consumer look for in judging its potential for safe and successful weight loss? A responsible and safe weight-loss program should be able to document for you the five following features:
The diet should be safe. It should include all of the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) for vitamins, minerals, and protein. The weight-loss diet should be low in calories (energy) only, not in essential foodstuffs.
The weight-loss program should be directed toward a slow, steady weight loss unless your doctor feels your health condition would benefit from more rapid weight loss. Expect to lose only about a pound a week after the first week or two. With many calorie-restricted diets there is an initial rapid weight loss during the first 1 to 2 weeks, but this loss is largely fluid. The initial rapid loss of fluid also is regained rapidly when you return to a normal calorie diet. Thus, a reasonable weight loss goal must be expected.
If you plan to lose more than 15 to 20 pounds, have any health problems, or take medication on a regular basis, you should be evaluated by your doctor before beginning your weight-loss program. A doctor can assess your general health and any medical conditions that might be affected by dieting and weight loss. Also, a physician should be able to advise you on the need for weight loss, the appropriateness of the weight-loss program, and a sensible goal of weight loss for you. If you plan to use a very low-calorie diet (a special liquid formula diet that replaces all food intake for 1 to 4 months), you should be examined and monitored by a doctor on a frequent basis.
Your program should include plans for weight maintenance after the weight loss phase is over. It is of little benefit to lose a large amount of weight only to regain it. Weight maintenance is the most difficult part of controlling weight and is not consistently implemented in weight-loss programs. The program you select should include help in permanently changing your dietary habits and level of physical activity, and to alter a lifestyle that may have contributed to weight gain in the past. Your program should provide behavior modification help, including education in healthy eating habits and long-term plans to deal with weight problems. One of the most important factors in maintaining weight loss appears to be increasing daily physical activity Try to be more active throughout the day and incorporate some simple calorie-burners into your everyday routine. Even the most basic activities (such as taking an after-dinner walk, using the stairs at the mall or office instead of taking an escalator or elevator, park your car farther away so you have a longer walk) can get you prepared for more regular exercise like walking or jogging. You may choose to incorporate an individually tailored exercise program into your schedule.
A commercial weight-loss program should provide a detailed statement of fees and costs of additional items such as dietary supplements.
Obesity is a chronic condition. Too often it is viewed as a temporary problem that can be treated for a few months with a strenuous diet. However, as most overweight people know, weight control must be considered a life-long effort. To be safe and effective, any weight-loss program must address the long-term approach or else the program is largely a waste of time, money and energy.
positrim is the only product from Amway suits all of these conditions. So it is the best weight management product.

Obesity-The universal problem

What is obesity?

The definition of obesity varies depending on what one reads, but in general, it is a chronic condition defined by an excess amount body fat. A certain amount of body fat is necessary for storing energy, heat insulation, shock absorption, and other functions. The normal amount of body fat (expressed as percentage of body fat) is between 25-30% in women and 18-23% in men. Women with over 30% body fat and men with over 25% body fat are considered obese.

How common is obesity?

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. One in three Americans is obese. Obesity is also increasing rapidly throughout the world, and the incidence of obesity has nearly doubled form 1991 to 1998.

Being Overweight Doesn't Mean You're Unhealthy!

The new research confirmed this. People who are overweight have a fifty-fifty chance of having high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or elevated blood sugar levels. Pretty good odds, but not as good as those for people who are within the normal weight range. They have a 75% chance of having normal results on blood tests for cholesterol and blood sugar. And for those who are obese, the chance of having normal results falls to one-third.

The definition of "ideal body weight" has been a thorn in the side of many people. Perceptions of how people appear, how their clothes fit, and how fat they are have permitted whole industries to flourish. Weight loss clinics, gyms and fitness centers, liposuction, and gastric bypass surgeries all were based at least partly on the presumption that being overweight equaled being at risk for heart disease and diabetes. The studies in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that there may be more to health than meets the eye.

What are the health risks associated with obesity?

Obesity is not just a cosmetic consideration; it is a dire health dilemma directly harmful to one's health. In the United States, roughly 300,000 deaths per year are directly related to obesity, and more than 80% of these deaths are in patients with a BMI (body mass index, which will be discussed later in this article) over 30. Obesity also increases the risk of developing a number of chronic diseases including:

Insulin Resistance.

Insulin is necessary for the transport of blood glucose (sugar) into the cells of muscle and fat (which is then used for energy). By transporting glucose into cells, insulin keeps the blood glucose levels in the normal range. Insulin resistance (IR) is the condition whereby the effectiveness of insulin in transporting glucose (sugar) into cells is diminished. Fat cells are more insulin resistant than muscle cells; therefore, one important cause of IR is obesity. The pancreas initially responds to IR by producing more insulin. As long as the pancreas can produce enough insulin to overcome this resistance, blood glucose levels remain normal. This IR state (characterized by normal blood glucose levels and high insulin levels) can last years. Once the pancreas can no longer keep up with producing high levels of insulin, blood glucose levels begin to rise, resulting in type 2 diabetes, thus IR is a pre-diabetes condition. In fact scientists now believe that the atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) associated with diabetes likely develops during this IR period.

Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes.

The risk of type 2 diabetes increases with the degree and duration of obesity. Type 2 diabetes is associated with central obesity; a person with central obesity has excess fat around his/her waist, so that the body is shaped like an apple.

High blood pressure (hypertension).

Hypertension is common among obese adults. A Norwegian study showed that weight gain tended to increase blood pressure in women more significantly than in men. The risk of developing high blood pressure is also higher in obese people who are apple shaped (central obesity) than in people who are pear shaped (fat distribution mainly in hips and thighs).

High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia)
Stroke (cerebrovascular accident or CVA)

Heart attack.

The Nurses Health Study found that the risk of developing coronary artery disease increased 3 to 4 times in women who had a BMI greater than 29. A Finnish study showed that for every one kilogram (2.2 pounds) increase in body weight, the risk of death from coronary artery disease increased by one percent. In patients who have already had a heart attack, obesity is associated with an increased likelihood of a second heart attack.

Congestive heart failure

Cancer.

While not conclusively proven, some observational studies have linked obesity to cancer of the colon in men and women, cancer of the rectum and prostate in men, and cancer of the gallbladder and uterus in women. Obesity may also be associated with breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women. Fat tissue is important in the production of estrogen, and prolonged exposure to high levels of estrogen increases the risk of breast cancer.

Things should not after meals

1 Don't smoke
Experiment from experts proves that smoking a cigarette after meal is comparable to smoking 10 cigarettes (chances of cancer is higher).
2 Don't eat fruits immediately
Immediately eating fruits after meals will cause stomach to be bloated with air. Therefore take fruit 1-2 hr after meal or 1hr before meal.
3 Don't drink tea
Because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the Protein content in the food we consume to be hardened thus difficult to digest.
4 Don't loosen your belt
Loosening the belt after a meal will easily cause the intestine to be twisted & blocked.
5 Don't bathe
Bathing will cause the increase of blood flow to the hands, legs & body thus the amount of blood around the stomach will therefore decrease. This will weaken the digestive system in our stomach.
6 Don't walk about
People always say that after a meal walk a hundred steps and you will live till 99. In actual fact this is not true. Walking will cause the digestive system to be unable to absorb the nutrition from the food we intake.
7Don't sleep immediately
The food we intake will not be able to digest properly. Thus will lead to gastric & infection in our intestine.

Importance of having Breakfast

Breakfast can help prevent strokes, heart attack and sudden death. Advice on not to skip breakfast! For those who always skip breakfast, should stop that habit now! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Because the frequency of heart attack, sudden death, and stroke peaks between 6:00 a.m. and noon, with the highest incidence being between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.What mechanism within the body could account for this significant jump in sudden death in the early morning hours?Platelet, tiny elements in the blood that keep us from bleeding to Death if we get a cut, can clump together inside our arteries due to cholesterol or laque buildup in the artery lining. It is in the morning hours that platelets become the most activated and tend to form these internal blood clots at the greatest frequency.
However, eating even a very light breakfast prevents the morning platelet activation that is associated with heart attacks and strokes. Studies performed at Memorial University in St.Johns , Newfoundlandfound that eating a light, very low-fat breakfast was critical in modifying the morning platelet activation. Subjects in the study consumed either low-fat or fat-free yogurt, orange juice, fruit, and a source of protein coming from yogurt or fat-free milk. So if you skip breakfast, it's important that you change this practice immediately in light of this research. Develop a simple plan to eat cereal, such as oatmeal or Bran Flakes, along with six ounces of grape juice or orange juice, and perhaps a piece of fruit. This simple plan will keep your platelets from sticking together, keep blood clots from forming, and perhaps head off a potential Heart Attack or stroke.

Protein

What is the function of Protein in our body?
Protein is the building block of our Body.
Require in large quantity (Macro)
Each and every cell in our body is made of Protein
Protein plays the role of repair and growth in our Body
1,Group of Cells makes Tissue
2.Group of Tissues makes Organs
3.Group of Organs makes Body
Thus our body requires Protein in the ratio of 1 gm per KG of body weight for Adult, Child requires 1 and 1/2 gm per KG of body weight and Pregnant woman requires 1 and 3/4 gm per KG of Body weight.

Asthma & older people

Some people who have had asthma all their life may find that it starts affecting them in different ways when they get older. For example, they may have coughed or wheezed previously, but as they get older, they may notice they become more breathless.
If flu, colds or other viral infections trigger your asthma you should consider having the flu vaccination.
Changing triggers
In older people, the symptoms of asthma are less likely to be triggered by allergies such as house-dust mites, furry and feathered pets and pollen. Symptoms are more likely to be triggered by: flu, colds or other viral infections; exercise; laughing or getting excited; depression or anxiety; some medicines; and irritants such as cigarette smoke, cold air, perfumes and chemical fumes. For older people, shortness of breath may be the only symptom. However it can be difficult to tell the difference between asthma and other conditions that cause similar symptoms, such as bronchitis, emphysema, heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) so it is sometimes difficult to diagnose in older adults. Studies have shown that air pollution can trigger symptoms in people who already have asthma. Those most at risk include people with severe asthma and older people with heart or chronic respiratory problems. If flu, colds or other viral infections trigger your asthma you should consider having the flu vaccination. Ask your doctor or asthma nurse or nurse whether you need one. People who are over 65 or anyone who is regularly using steroid tablets should also talk to their doctor or asthma nurse about whether they need a pneumoccocal vaccination.

Two-thirds believe asthma is a childhood condition

More than two-thirds of people mistakenly believe that asthma is only a childhood condition, a survey has revealed. In fact, of the 5.1 million people in the UK with asthma, almost 70% are over 15 years old and 40% developed the condition after their 18th birthday. The research, commissioned by Boots and the National Asthma Campaign, found serious gaps in people's understanding of asthma and its symptoms. Only 4% of those interviewed thought that asthma was common in the 50-plus age bracket, and many put their persistent wheezing and breathlessness down to 'getting older'. Just over 40% did not realise that a troublesome cough that is worse at night or early in the morning are common symptoms that indicate poorly-controlled asthma.Professor Martyn Partridge (pictured), the National Asthma Campaign's chief medical adviser said: 'There seems to be a commonly held misconception that asthma only affects children. Not only does the condition affect all ages, it can start for the first time at any age.'It may be the case that many people have asthma but don't realise it. It is vital to recognise the symptoms early on in order to receive appropriate treatment and to control the condition by working with your GP, practice nurse or local pharmacist. If the condition goes untreated, it can lead to a downward spiral of poor health and an increased risk of long-term lung damage.'Sandra Phillips, 53, from Norfolk, recently found out that she has asthma: 'I had been feeling out of breath and wheezing a lot more than in my 40s. I put this down to the fact that I was getting older, until my daughter suggested that perhaps I had developed asthma. When I visited my GP, he confirmed that I did have asthma. Now I'm on the correct medication, my life is back to normal and I am no longer restricted in what I can do.'The National Asthma Campaign is Boots Charity of the Year 2003/2004. An information leaflet about asthma will be available in Boots' stores across the UK from the end of April and money raised through the company's fundraising activities during 2003/2004 will help fund vital Campaign research into the causes and treatment of asthma.

Asthma

Asthma (say: az-muh) is a condition that affects a person's airways, which are also called breathing tubes or bronchial (say: brong-kee-ul) tubes. These tubes lead from the windpipe, or trachea (say: tray-kee-uh), into the lungs. For most kids, breathing is simple: They breathe in through their noses or mouths and the air goes into the windpipe. From there, it travels through the airways and into the lungs. But for kids with asthma, breathing can be a lot more difficult because their airways are very sensitive.

An asthma flare-up, which some people call an asthma attack or episode, happens when a person's airways get swollen and narrower and it becomes a lot harder for air to get in and out of the lungs. Sometimes the swollen airways produce extra mucus, which makes things pretty sticky, so it's easy to see why it's hard to breathe.

In between flare-ups, a kid's breathing can be totally normal or seem that way. But during a flare-up, it can feel like the person is breathing through a straw. A kid with asthma may wheeze (a whistling sound when he or she breathes), cough, and feel tightness in the chest. An asthma flare-up can get worse and worse if a kid doesn't use asthma medicine. After an asthma flare-up, the airways almost always return to the way they were before, although it can take several days.

Who Gets Asthma?

Asthma is more common than you might think. As many as 6 million kids in the United States have it. Asthma affects about one or two kids out of 10. That means if you have 20 kids in your class, two to four of them might have asthma. Asthma can start at any age - even in a little baby or an adult - but it's most common in school-age kids.

No one really knows why one person's airways are more sensitive than another person's, but we do know that asthma runs in families. That means if a kid has asthma, he or she may also have a parent, sibling, uncle, or other relative who has asthma or had it as a child.

Asthma flare-ups may sound a little like a cold, with coughing and wheezing, but asthma isn't contagious. You can't catch it from someone like you can catch a cold.

What Causes an Asthma Flare-Up?

Different kids have different triggers - things that set off asthma flare-ups. There are a lot of triggers. Some kids are sensitive to allergens (say: ah-lur-jenz), substances that cause allergic reactions in the airways. Common allergens for kids with asthma include dust mites (tiny bugs that live in dust), mold (if you've ever been in a damp basement and smelled something funny, it was probably mold), and pollen (from trees, grass, and weeds).

A lot of kids have asthma flare-ups when they are near furry animals. Cats and dogs both have what's called animal dander in their fur. This is sort of like dandruff, and it's a trigger that can cause a powerful reaction in the airways.

Some substances can trigger flare-ups because they really irritate the airways. These include perfume, chalk dust, and cigarette smoke. Smoking is always a bad idea, especially around someone who has asthma.

Sometimes an infection can be a trigger and set off an asthma flare-up. If a kid comes down with a cold or the flu, his or her airways may become more sensitive than usual. In some kids, cold air itself can cause an asthma flare-up, and so can exercise. In fact, some kids have what's called exercise-induced asthma. This means they have breathing problems only when they exercise.

How Is Asthma Treated?

Kids who have asthma should try to avoid things that can cause their airways to tighten. But some triggers - like cats, colds, and chalk dust - can't always be avoided. That's why kids who are sensitive to those things must manage their asthma by taking medication.

Not every kid's asthma is the same, so there are different medicines for treating it. It's not like curing a sore throat or an earache, when everybody gets the same medicine. Instead, the doctor will think about what causes the asthma flare-ups, how fast the flare-ups happen, and how serious they are. Then he or she will decide on the best kind of treatment.

Some kids need to take asthma medication only once in a while, when they have a flare-up. This is called rescue medicine because it works fast to open the airways, so the person can breathe. Other kids may need to take controller medicine every day. Controller medicine works to keep flare-ups from happening.

A kid who knows in advance that he or she will be around allergens or other triggers may need to take medication ahead of time that will keep the airways open. And kids who have exercise-induced asthma can take medication before exercising so they'll be able to finish all their laps around the track. Whatever their triggers are, kids who have asthma can use a peak flow meter to get an idea of how well they are breathing that day and whether they need to take any medicine.

Asthma medicine often is taken through an inhaler (say: in-hay-lur). An inhaler is a plastic tube that holds a container of medicine. You may have seen a friend or someone in school using an inhaler, which is held up to the mouth. A kid holds the inhaler up to his or her mouth and breathes in. The medicine comes out in a mist that goes into the lungs. The medicine in the mist relaxes the airways, so the person can breathe easier.

Space Out With a Spacer

Sometimes a kid uses an inhaler and something called a spacer. A spacer is a piece that attaches to the inhaler and holds the mist in one place, between the inhaler and the kid's mouth. It lets the kid breathe in when he or she is ready, so it's easier to inhale all the medication.

Sometimes kids take other asthma medicines by swallowing them. Whatever medications a kid takes, the goal is always the same: to get the asthma flare-ups under total control, so the triggers don't create problems.

A lot of kids find their asthma goes away or becomes less serious as they get older. Some doctors think this happens because the airways grow wider as a kid grows up and gets bigger. With more room in the airways, the air has an easier time getting in and out.

Some people do have asthma as adults, but it doesn't have to slow them down. Plenty of Olympic athletes and other sports stars manage their asthma, but keep on playing!

False Professors--Charles G. Finney:

Text- -"They feared the Lord, and served their own gods." 2 Kings 17:33.

WHEN the ten tribes of Israel were carried away captives by the king of Assyria, their places were supplied with strangers of different idolatrous nations, who knew nothing of the religion of the Jews. Very soon, the wild beasts increased in the country, and the lions destroyed multitudes of the people, and they thought it was because they did not know the god of that country, and had therefore ignorantly transgressed his religion, and offended him, and he had sent the lions among them as a punishment. So they applied to the king, who told them to get one of the priests of the Israelites to teach them the manner of the god of the land. They took this advice, and obtained one of the priests to come to Bethel and teach them the religious ceremonies and modes of worship that had been practiced there. And he taught them to fear Jehovah, as the god of that country. But still, they did not receive him as the only God. They feared him, that is, they feared his anger and his judgments, and to avert these they performed the prescribed rites. But they served their own gods. They kept up their idolatrous worship, and this was what they loved and preferred, though they felt obliged to pay some reverence to Jehovah, as the god of that country. There are still multitudes of persons, professing to fear God, and perhaps possessing a certain kind of fear of the Lord, who nevertheless serve their own gods- -they have other things to which their hearts are supremely devoted, and other objects in which they mainly put their trust.

There are, as you know, two kinds of fear. There is that fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom, which is founded in love. There is also a slavish fear, which is a mere dread of evil and is purely selfish. This is the kind of fear which was possessed by those people spoken of in the text. They were afraid Jehovah would send his judgments upon them, if they did not perform certain rites, and this was the motive they had for paying him worship. Those who have this fear are supremely selfish, and while they profess to reverence Jehovah, have other gods whom they love and serve.

There are several classes of persons to whom this is applicable, and my object to-night is to describe some of them, in such a way that those of you here, who possess this character, may know yourselves, and may see how it is that your neighbours know you and understand your real characters.

To serve a person is to be obedient to the will and devoted to the interests of that individual. It is not properly called serving, where only certain acts are performed, without entering into the service of the person, but to serve is to make it a business to do the will and promote the interest of the person. To serve God is to make religion the main business of life. It is to devote one's self, heart, life, powers, time, influence, and all to promote the interests of God, to build up the kingdom of God, and to advance the glory of God. Who are they who, while they profess to fear the Lord, serve their own gods?

I answer, First, All those of you, who have not heartily and practically renounced the ownership of your possessions, and given them up to God.

It is self-evident that if you have not done this, you are not serving God. Suppose a gentleman were to employ a clerk to take care of his store, and suppose the clerk were to continue to attend to his own business, and when asked to do what is necessary for his employer, who pays him wages, he should reply, "I really have so much business of my own to attend to, that I have no time to do these things;" would not every body cry out against such a servant, and say he was not serving his employer at all, his time is not his own, it is paid for, and he but served himself? So where a man has not renounced the ownership of himself, not only in thought but practically, he has not taken the first lesson in religion. He is not serving the Lord, but serving his own gods.
